Henry Jamison “Jam” Handy Henry Jamison “Jam” Handy <1> As Detroit film production took its start, one company stood out above the rest. The Jam Handy Organization was responsible for the majority of film and cartoon production for Detroit, dominantly focusing on auto-industry promotions and training videos for the company and their personnel. It’s Founder was Henry Jamison/”Jam” Handy was born in 1886 Philadelphia. At five he moved with his family to Chicago. His father, a newspaper editor, promoted the Columbian Exposition of 1893. He was smart and was able to breeze through school and was accepted to the University of Michigan by the time he was 17. He would become a champion swimmer credited by the International Swimming Hall of Fame for having invented the modern style for freestyle breathing and numerous other swimming accolades.Winner of numerous national championships and the 1904 Olympic bronze medal ib swimming , followed up with a bronze in the 1924 Olympics for water polo, he was historically known as the last surviving medalist of the 1904 Olympics. Jam would utilize his swimming career to transition into a film career by using film for underwater “stroke correction and technique analysis”. It was Jam Handy who was the first to invent and shape the way Americans bought and sold consumer goods, particularly cars. Along the way, he also shaped the way we learn about the world and how we see ourselves in it. <2> Handy attended tonly one academic year at the University of Michigan [1902–03] working as a campus correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. On May 8 1903, he wrote an article about a lecture in the Elocution 2 class given by Prof. Thomas C. Trueblood as a “course in lovemaking.” Handy went on to describe how Trueblood had dropped to a bended knee in order to demonstrate how to make an effective marriage proposal. John T. McCutcheon, a Chicago Record Herald cartoonist, followed the next day with a cartoon about a “Professor Foxy Truesport” showing his class how to best make love. Neither Trueblood nor university President James B. Angell were amused. Ten days after the initial article was published, Handy was suspended for a year for “publishing false and injurious statements affecting the character of the work of one of the Professors.” Handy was told he could re-apply one year later. Instead, Handy decided to apply to a different school, but he was unable to gain acceptance to other schools because of what had happened at the University of Michigan. Handy was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania, but was told to leave after two weeks of classes.Tribune editor Medill McCormick tried to intervene on Handy’s behalf, but Angell refused to change the suspension. Academically blackballed, wherever he applied for admission he was turned down. <3> At this point Tribune editor Medill McCormick, feeling partly responsible, offered Handy a job in the Tribune newsroom, rotating between various departments. Gaining an interest in advertising, Handy moved to an ad agency, where he was exposed to slide shows and early motion pictures and recognized their power to educate and persuade. Handy observed this training and left the Tribune to assist John H. Patterson of National Cash Register use slides to help train workers. With help from another associate, Handy began making and distributing films that showed consumers how to operate everyday products. After World War I broke out, Handy began making films to show how to operate military equipment. During this time the Jam Handy Organization was formed. By mid 1930 there were over 400 writers, directors, and trade craft workers employed by the the Jam Handy organization. The Jam Handy Organization even employed two full size orchestras full time just for the incidental music in its movies. During the 1940s and 1950s, famed animator Max Fleischer worked for Handy in the production of he first animated version of Rudoph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Fleischer’s brother dave and cartoonist Rube Goldberg also worked for Handy. 4> *************************************************** FREE ID & ESTIMATE SERVICES http://goldsmithworks.com/1-WATCHWORKS/ before we decided to use many online programs |
